Access
The libraries can be used by Mackenzie Presbyterian University and Mackenzie Presbyterian Institute teaching staff, students and employees, and by the external community, being opened for consultation for the general public, with free access to the collection, except loan services. The users of other institutions have access to consult and research in loco, being the household loans carried out only via the loan system within the Libraries. To users with special needs, internal and external, an element of the staff is selected for personal assistance, carrying out the research activities and search of bibliographic materials in the database and physical collection, along with other support, when needed. The users shall present the student´s or functional ID to enter in the whereabouts of the libraries, as well as for the usage of its services.
Usage
The Library Usage Rules must be observed in the Rules of Procedure, related to discipline, usage and conservation of the collections, facilities, and availability of provided service.
The quantity of borrowed material and the deadlines for devolution vary according to the user category. Material reservation and renewal service are at disposal.
It is not subject for loan reference books, local consultation, rare, classic and out of stock books, without conditions for replacement, and permanent copies of books, which compose the basic bibliography.
The borrowed material is non-transferable and its keeping is the user’s responsibility, who took it out of the Library, and shall zeal for the observance of the loan deadlines and conservation of the collection.
The applied penalties by the Library are available in the Rules of Procedure.
Collection's Technical Organization
The collection´s organization meets the International Library Science criteria of standardization.
For the technical processing of the books, the listing code used is the Anglo American Cataloguing Rules, 2nd ed. (AACR2).
Two listing systems have been adopted due to the adequacy to the specific areas of knowledge: Library of Congress Classification, for being the most appropriate and efficient for Theology, and the Dewey Decimal Classification (CDD), 21th ed., for the other areas.
Updating Policy
The process of book acquisition is indirect, having its operationalization such as quotation and closing of supply request by the Purchasing Department centralized and not by the Library.
The process of periodic acquisition is direct, having its operationalization such as cotation and closing of supply request centralized by the Library, apart from the acquisition control and subscription renewals, records and controls of booklets and samples.
The Library holds the control of the acquisition of books and periodics since the purchase order by the teaching staff, verification the data completeness, duplication until receiving the materials, verification of conformity and physical state for acceptance, patrimony and registry incorporating to the collection.
The collection is acquired from basic and complementary bibliography by the graduation and post-graduation professors, according to each subject’s needs; suggestions and indications by the students, employees and users in general, are also considered in the updating.
The quantity of copies is determined proportionally to the number of students according to the recommendations of the education official organs and the book’s usage demand.
As a subsidy to the professors in the preparation of basic and complementary bibliography, the Library forwards catalogs, lists from bookstores and specialized publishers, providing indicative database to consult, also promoting academic products demonstrations and presentations.
Computerization Policy
The software of management used by the George Alexander Library is the Pergamum System.
Pergamum is a computerized system of library management, developed by the Divisão de Processamento de Dados da Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Paraná, which contemplates the main functions of a library and Works in an integrated manner from the acquisition to the loan.
Pergamum System allows access to the database via Internet browser, working with the server/client architecture for access and updating the data in the local and remote network, on-line data entrance and update. It presents compatibility with the biblioteconomic listing code AACR2, second level, for all kinds of documents; it works with MARC 21 format in the internal bibliographic records, for exportation and importation, also allowing data importation from on-line cooperative listing centers or CD-ROM, and data exportation for exchanging bibliographic records, via ISO-2709 format.
Pergamum holds a text, image and sound management system, periodic control with Kardex and article indexing. It also presents loan control for any kind of document, reservation, personalized billing with differentiated time period by types of materials and users, devolutions, renewals, deals, fines, negotiations and suspensions, bar code label creation for loaning documents, usage statistics counting, technical processing, etc., emission of several kind of reports in conformity with the criteria recommended by MEC / CAPES.
